Well this morning was the going away breakfast for abuelita - Dominic's grandma. There was tons of food, lots of Spanish and a good amount of stress. I spent he morning trying to get Dominic to eat his egg, never happened, then I rushed off to pick up some supplies, kid in tow and then helped Veronica in the kitchen. I scored some food and coffee and had a brief chat with one of two non-spanish speaking guests there. She volunteer's in Hout Bay as a trauma counsellor. Intense!
I had to rush off to an 11:00 appointment but do to having to do a 33 point turn to get my car turned around only to still need to ask someone to move their car out of my way, I was about half an hour late. That and it took me a while to find a parking spot but I tore up and over the mountain from Camps Bay to town. As I've said before, I was in good Africa time so no biggie. Plus I was meeting a friend so he was very understanding.
Anyway, point of the story is today I started yet another volunteer/internship position. I'll be helping out in the office of Research Africa, mostly on the editor's desk (where my friend works). I'd explain what I'll be doing and what they do but I can't really. Let's just say, they gather and provide info for people who wish to apply for funding from Europeaid, specifically for money for African partnerships and programmes in the fields of science and technology. I could be totally wrong but I think that's the general idea. I'll be helping out there three times a week, trying to get a feel for the realities of NGO work and attempting to make some sort of contribution.
Earlier I mentioned Hout Bay. Well tomorrow I'll be volunteering Wednesday and Friday mornings at a school in Hout Bay. I'll let you know how my first day goes. All I know right now is there are 3 Americans currently volunteering and apparently my help is most welcome. My good friend hooked me up with this gig and driving to Hout Bay a couple times a week is certainly not going to be the worst thing in the world.
Post too long again?
Shame.
I'll try to load some pictures or funny stories to make up for it.
That is great! You will have a ton of experience when you get home. I'm sure it'll all help when you get out of school (awk, school!) I'll have to get used to you in school again! Good job dot.
ReplyDeleteWell aren't you just Miss Busy-bee, do-gooder! Way to go getting more experience and helping out generously.
ReplyDeletePS. The wart-hog ribs made me salivate...wrong for a veg-head? Well, my sweet potato risotto should be good tonight.
